Description

Description

Designing EU Climate Adaptation in the Light of Mitigation Policies (ADAPTEU) connects high-level experts to develop transnational, transcontinental and transdisciplinary research, knowledge and dissemination in the area of EU climate sustainability, with particular regard to adaptation, in the light of achievable mitigation objectives. ADAPTEU explores the question whether the climate policies of the Union for adaptation are consistent with achieved and achievable mitigation targets, against the background of climate rights. In the light of achievable mitigation objectives, are the EU adaptation policies for climate change effective and compliant with the evolving state of the climate and climate rights? The project will answer this question by systemically evaluating impact assessement and response procedures for major extreme and slow onset hazards, such as wildfires and sea-level rise, as well as core challenges, such as the costs, benefits and security of nuclear energy and small modular nuclear reactors–given their potential significant contribution to the net zero carbon target–besides backbone renewables. Analysis will include the different energy mix and technological knowledge of the different EU countries. Notably, the CoE will: -Become a hub to foster expertise on EU climate adaptation, in the light of mitigation policies and against the background of evolving climate rights -Create networks in the Northern and Southern hemispheres, including strong ties with developing countries, involving academics, policymakers, stakeholders and civil society at the international, EU, state and regional level -Establish a transdisciplinary and transnational dialogue for progressing effective EU adaptation and mitigation strategies -Elaborate a comparative analysis of regulation and policy in core developed and developing States to foster the implementation of the European Green Deal -Deliver education to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing students.
