Description
Description | Project Outcomes and Objectives: The proposed project involves completion of detail design and critical utility relocations to enable construction of 1.3 kilometres of Bus-Only lanes (along with buffered on-road cycling lanes) connecting the existing Bus-Only lanes between Liverpool Road and Brock Road along Durham Highway 2 in the City of Pickering. This builds upon the already existing (or soon to be completed) four kilometres of Bus-Only lanes completed through the Ontario/Metrolinx Quick Win program. Proposed work includes detail design and critical utility relocations. Project Readiness: As part of the Ontario/Quick Win program the Highway 2 Transit Priority Measures Class Environmental Assessment (EA) study (durhambrt.ca) was completed in 2012. The preferred design from the EA study included curbside bus-only and buffered bike lanes for 10Km along Highway 2 through the City of Pickering and Town of Ajax. The proposed project falls within the approved EA study area. In addition to having a completed EA, work already completed for this segment includes 30% detailed design, preliminary utility investigations and geotechnical studies. How the Project Fits with Strategic plan: This project builds towards the completion of a Bus rapid transit (BRT) system which will further ensure the Regional transportation infrastructure is functional, integrated, reliable and barrier-free. In addition the proposed bike lanes will support and encourage active living and healthy lifestyles to enhance the connectivity between our communities. Customer Experience Impact: With a completed curbside BRT system customers will experience an increase in reliability along with a reduction in travel time. The completion of longer on-road buffered bike lane segments will encourage an increase in cycling participation and promote increased inter-municipal travel via cycling. |
