Developing and enhancing of environmental economic accounts

Project aims to support the development of more and better environmental accounts needed to underpin sustainability policies and EU-level policy goals. This includes both developing new environmental accounts (developing ecosystem accounts according to the amendment of the regulation 691/2011; activity 2.11 of the themes and priorities of a call (SMP ESS)-SUSTAINABILITY 2025) but also improving the quality and integration of existing environmental accounts aligned with Article 8a of Regulation (EU) 691/2011, which mandates quality improvements and efficiency gains in statistical processes (activity 2.11 of the themes and priorities of a call (SMP ESS)-SUSTAINABILITY 2025). The action is divided into three work packages: WP1: Developing ecosystem accounts Focuses on refining, developing and automating the compilation of the ecosystem extent, condition, and services accounts, applying Eurostat guidance and developing further the areas which need additional effort. Work includes advancing ecosystem services and condition evaluation methods (for example climate regulation, air filtration) and developing automatization and cost effectiveness. WP2: Developing an integrated system for monetary accounts WP 2 targets the integration of existing standalone accounts — EGSS, EPEA and ESST into a coherent system, following the integrated monetary accounts model. It includes methodological work and advancing IT-based solution to ensure automated and consistent compilation. WP3: Modernization and enhancing consistency between air emission, physical energy flow and environmental taxes accounts Aims to modernize outdated compilation processes for air emission, energy and environmental taxes accounts and align them with basic energy statistics and relevant components of national accounts. Activities include automation of the compilation of the accounts, harmonizing fuel data classifications and improving data quality through validation tools.
