Developing Potato Technology in the Republic of Karelia 2007–2009 (Interreg)

Potato is grown in approximately 5.5 per cent of the land used for agriculture in the Republic of Karelia. Its signifi cance as a basic food item and fodder is evident. However, the potato crop levels have been relatively low compared to Finland’s crops. In addition, the harvest quality has been poor. The development activities in the Republic of Karelia must be focused on improving the reliability of production and maintaining the seed potato base, recognising and controlling plant diseases occurring in production, using organic fertilisers for environment and quality reasons, and increasing harvest yield. The goal of the project was to gain a better picture of the potato disease situation in the Republic of Karelia and to seek solutions for the problems such diseases have caused in the industry. For Finnish potato industry actors, the cooperation would enable business growth opportunities and the ability to expand the knowledge of potato production in the border region and of the parasites and diseases that occur there. In addition, it would enable closer cooperation with plant inspection authorities and advisory organisations.
