Germany and the Netherlands are world leaders in the advanced legislation on animal welfare. Recent studies show the problem of the occurrence of unwanted behavior (eg feather picking and cannibalism) in economically oriented poultry farming systems and thus the drastically decreasing quality of life of the animals. Experts and scientists are convinced that most of these problems can be positively influenced by innovative lighting based on LED technology. The use of lamps in farms has hitherto been based on the luminaires developed for the requirements of human vision. However, humans and birds differ significantly in their perception of light or brightness. Thus, the challenge is to develop artificial light sources according to the species-specific perceptiveness and - as already demanded in the German animal welfare regulations - the artificial light in poultry houses so as to match the natural light as far as possible. This project aims to provide a timely solution to tackling existing problems in large-scale application-oriented research and the optimal light composition. The aim of the project is to develop an optimal lighting system, which can be adapted especially for the various types of poultry.
