Description
Description | Tampere–Jyväskylä comprehensive railway connects to the North Sea–Baltic rail corridor in Tampere and road corridor in Jyväskylä. The railway is mostly single track, and both freight and passenger transport operate on the same track. The lack of double track and traffic operating points that enable encounter of two trains in the single-track railway restricts the capacity, speed, length of trains, and the growth potential of transport. The disruptions lead to the continuous delay of trains, which reflects throughout the Finnish rail network. The objective of the project is to plan the improvements on the functionality and safety, to decrease sensitivity to disturbances, and to improve capacity, speed, and possibility to operate longer trains. The project consists of an EIA, general and railway plan of Lahdenperä–Jämsä and railway and construction plan of three traffic operating points. The planned Lahdenperä–Jämsä double track and shortcut enables shorter travel times and increased speed and capacity, and removal of level crossings improves safety. Development of the traffic operating points with longer side tracks improve throughput capacity and possibility to operate longer trains and ensure safe and functional encounter of trains in the single-track section. The planning also includes required changes to the technical systems implemented to optimise operations and to improve safety, and measurements and investigations to ensure that the planning solutions are feasible. The project fulfils the objectives of the work programme as it contributes to capacity and performance upgrade of existing lines including the removal of level-crossings and upgrades for long trains. Railway is especially important for freight traffic and export. It improves interconnections between rail and other modes of transport and connection to the comprehensive RRT terminal of Tampere and further induces modal shift from road and air traffic to rail. |
