Description

Information Mumbai Port Trust has come up with Development, Operation and Maintenance of Kanhoji Angre Island [KAI] as tourist destination on PPP Basis. with a ticket size of 50 INR Crores. This project in Tourism [Leisure / Adventure / Heritage Tourism] sub-sector involves The current status of the project is Work Start - Appointed Date and is being developed through the PPP route. Economic/Social Impact of the Project Mumbai Harbour is located along the West Coast of India. The entrance to the Mumbai harbour is from the South West between Prong's Reef at the southernmost tip of Mumbai and Thal Reef lying off the mainland to its South West. Kanhoji Angre Island, earlier known as Khanderi [Kennery] Island is an off shoot hillock of the western Ghats having total area of around 16 acres and is situated mid sea off the shores of Thal Fishing village near Alibagh of Raigad district, south of Mumbai. The entire island was fortified by Shivaji in 1660-78 AD to lodge their Army and Navy to keep a check on the Siddis at Murud-Janjira Fort and the British. It was handed over by Marathas to Kanhoji Angre when he took command of the Maratha Navy in 1708. He fought and won a number of sea battles with Portuguese and British till his death in 1729. Even after his death, the island was controlled by his sons and several attempts to take over the island failed. The island came under the control of British in 1750 and the existing Lighthouse was built by them in 1867 to guide the ships entering Mumbai. Khanderi Island and the Lighthouse were renamed in the honour of the great Kanhoji Angre in 1998 on the occasion of 125th anniversary of Mumbai Port Trust. Based on its mid sea location and the legacy of Kanhoji Angre, the objective of this project is to develop and operate the Island as a tourist destination to attract national and international tourists who are visiting the city of Mumbai and nearby region. The primary focus shall be on heritage conservation, art & culture, hospitality, food & beverages, adventure and water sports and possible recreational components.
