Description
Description | The project includes the provision of anchor capital and technical assistance grants for the Facility for Energy Inclusion Off-Grid Energy Access Fund (FEI-OGEF), a USD 100 million blended finance facility for sub-Saharan African countries. It is a joint initiative of the African Development Bank (AfDB) and NDF, with discussions dating back to 2016. The fund has the structure of a debt fund and mobilizes equity investors and senior lenders to provide local and hard currency loans to off-grid energy companies. The aim of the fund is to improve access to clean energy for off-grid and underserved households and to involve local financial institutions as co-financiers. Lions Head Global Partners (LHGP) was selected as fund manager in 2016 in an international competitive process led by the AfDB. The trust participation of KfW on behalf of the BMZ supports the Green Citizens' Energy for Africa initiative. The aim of this joint investment initiative is to provide local businesses, SMEs and households in rural Africa with access to off-grid renewable energy. FEI-OGEF plans to invest around USD 15 million over five years in African companies offering climate-friendly off-grid energy solutions. The equity investment supports the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in particular SDG 7 and SDG 13. FEI-OGEF, together with its sister fund FEI-OnG, forms the AfDB's Facility for Energy Inclusion (FEI), which promotes off-grid renewable energy in Africa. |
