In 1999 the field of developmental-behavioral pediatrics reached a new milestone, when the American Board of Medical Specialties approved specialty certification status for developmental-behavioral pediatrics. The intent of the Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Training Program is to build upon past successes, to train the next generation of leaders in developmental-behavioral pediatrics and to provide pediatric practitioners, residents and medical students with essential biopsychosocial knowledge and clinical expertise. The purpose of the Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Training Program is to enhance behavioral, psychosocial, and developmental aspects of pediatric care. This is to be accomplished through: 1) support for fellows in developmental-behavioral pediatrics preparing for leadership roles as teachers, investigators, and clinicians advancing the field of developmental/behavioral pediatrics; and 2) providing pediatric practitioners, residents, and medical students with essential biopsychosocial knowledge and clinical expertise. Trainees in this program should: receive an appropriate balance of academic, clinical, and community opportunities; work towards being culturally competent; and demonstrate a capacity to evaluate, diagnose or rule out, develop, and provide evidence-based interventions to individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other developmental disabilities (DD) after completion of their clinical training; and demonstrate an ability to use a family-centered approach.
