Description

Description

In 2004, Dhaka Telephone Company Limited (DTCL) was awarded a license by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) for the provision of fixed telecommunications services in all four zones covering the entire country -- North-West, North-East, South-East, and South-West. This new license directly followed BTRC’s decision to introduce competition in the fixed line sector and thus ending the long standing fixed line monopoly of Bangladesh Telegraph & Telephone Board (BTTB). Private operators like DTCL were seen as key to improving the very low tele-density in Bangladesh estimated at 0.4 telephone for every 100 persons. DTCL initially planned to set up a network, with a potential to provide basic telephony, value added services and various data services to 200,000 subscribers all over Bangladesh. Within five years of operation, DTCL planned to expand the network to have a potential 500,000 fixed telephone lines covering both voice and data services. In July 2006, DTCL began commercial operations in Chittagong and Sylhet divisions. In 2007, along with two other private land phone companies, RanksTel and and Square Informatix, received licence from the BTRC to operate in Dhaka. Operator's license suspended after Illegal VoIP activity. Needs an update of the status when the Bangladesh telecommunication regulatory comission release the verdict. 2007 Dutch-Bangla Bank Ltd loan of Tk. 900.00 million to Dhaka Telephone Company Ltd; source: http://www.dutchbanglabank.com/Current_News/Banking_Business/Banking_Business.htm#Dhaka%20Telephone%20Company%20Ltd.
