Dialog Telekom Ltd (DTL)(formerly MTN Networks Ltd.)received its 20-year license to operate a nationwide GSM cellular service on September 29, 1993. The company was a joint venture between local conglomerate Mahajara Oganization Ltd. (10%) and Telecom Malaysia (90%). As of 2001, DTL was a fully-owned subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia Sdn Bhd.(TM). In July 2005, TM sold 9.9% stake in DTL through an initial public offering and raised US$ 85 million. In May 1994, DTL signed a five-year US$10.1 million contract with Alcatel for the supply of RBS's and switching equipment. By end of 1995, the company invested US$15 million in the network with a capacity of 30,000 lines. In November 2001, DTL awarded a Euro7million (US$6.63million) turnkey contract to Alcatel for expansion of the GSM Network with a completion date targeted for end of 2001. In April 2003, the company announced it was investing an additional $90m in network expansion. In January 2004, MTN Networks secured a US$ 50 million long term loan from the International Finance Corporation to fund an ongoing expansion program. The company launched its GSM network on April 1, 1995 under the name Dialog. The launch covered areas along the west coast in the cities of Colombo, Kandy, Negombo, Chilaw, and further inland in Matale. In March 2004, DTL launched a pilot 3G ( third generation) mobile telephony services project. As of June 2005, DTL competed with three other mobile operators - Lanka Cellular Services (Pvt) Limited, Mobitel (Pvt) Limited, and Celltel Lanka Limited. In 2007, Dialog Telekom recieved from IFC a $30 million equity investment to acquire a 1.6 percent holding in Dialog from Telekom Malaysia (TM) and a $70 million loan. In 2007, Dialog's main shareholder, Telekom Malaysia Bhd announced a demerger of its fixed-line and mobile businesses to create two separate entities - Telekom Malaysia and TM International. The demerger was completed on April 28, 2008, when TM International was listed on Bursa Malaysia as publicly traded, indpendent company.
