Description | The European Central Bank (ECB) has selected 36 payment service providers from across the euro area to participate in a pilot project for the planned digital euro. The pilot will test a beta version of the digital euro, functionally and technically close to the design foreseen in draft legislation, without legal tender status. Testing will involve payments from person to person and person to business, both online and offline, including mobile payments and e-commerce. The trial is set to start in the second half of 2027 and run for twelve months as preparation for a potential first issuance of the digital euro in 2029, pending EU regulation adoption. |
