Description
Description | The Digital Euro is a public digital payment system launched by the European Central Bank (ECB) in 2021 to future-proof the euro in a changing payments landscape. It is designed to complement cash and existing digital options, enhance privacy, foster innovation, and offer a secure alternative to private platforms. The Digital Euro will be accessible to all, guaranteed by the ECB, and accepted across the eurozone. It functions like a non-remunerated current account (wallet) managed through users' usual banks but held on the ECB balance sheet. The ECB plans to decide in Q4 2025 whether to proceed with implementation. |
