Description

Deusem is the electricity distribution company for the east-central region of El Salvador, serving mainly the residential customers in the department of Usulatan. In 1998, Corp. Electricidad de Caracas (EDC) acquired 96.1% of Deusem's shares for US$ 8 million. Still in 1998, Reliant Energy (formerly know as Houston Industries), acquired part of EDC's shares plus the remaining shareholder's stakes (3.9%), such that both EDC and Reliant ended up with 50% of the shares each. Finally, in 2000, AES Corp. acquired Reliant's shares in Deusem (note that AES Corp. holds 87% of EDC). Deusem has a 503-KM distribution network and services approximately 41,000 customers as of January 2001.
