The project involves the preservation of the original 40 boundary stones that marked the 100-square-mile tract of land selected by George Washington in 1791 for Washington, D.C. Currently, 36 of these stones remain in place. Preservation efforts have been ongoing for over two decades, led by engineer and preservationist Stephen Powers and supported by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, including local chapters such as the Dr. Elisha Dick Chapter which has cared for the Southwest 8 stone for over 75 years. Recent activities include rededication of the Southwest 8 stone site with a new fence modeled after the original 1950s design.
