The Kanpur Commissionerate Police are initiating a surveillance system using Google Maps to monitor criminal activities by tracking repeat offenders through their mobile numbers. The system requires voluntary participation and consent from offenders to enable location sharing via Google Maps. The pilot project will be launched in Kanpur and involves training police personnel, equipping police stations with computing equipment, and implementing a Standard Operating Procedure linked to the station in-charge's Gmail account. The system aims to reduce physical verification visits and includes provisions for video communication with offenders. Future plans include implementing wearable tracking devices funded potentially through CSR.
