Description
Description | With Phase II of the Horn of Africa - Groundwater for Resilience Project (P511492) Djibouti will be joining the Horn of Africa - Groundwater for Resilience Project (P174867), which started with Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). This regional project aims to increase sustainable access and management of groundwater resources in the Horn of Africa's borderlands, addressing urgent water supply needs and fostering transboundary cooperation. The project's development objective is to strengthen sustainable groundwater management and improve climate-resilient access to water in rural areas of Djibouti. It comprises two main components: delivering inclusive groundwater services to priority areas and generating groundwater information and strengthening regional and national institutions. Expected outcomes include improved groundwater access for communities, strengthened regional and national groundwater management institutions, enhanced cooperation among participating countries, and increased resilience to water scarcity. Key features include regional cooperation facilitated by IGAD, a focus on borderland areas to improve water supply and foster cross-border cooperation, and consideration of complex land rights and access issues, particularly for women. The project aims to ensure equitable access to land and water resources, benefiting from regional cooperation and addressing both shallow and deep groundwater needs. |
