Our creative alliance comprised of key European festivals specializing in documentary cinema was founded in 2008 under the name Doc Alliance. The five founding festivals – CPH:DOX, Millennium Docs Against Gravity, DOK Leipzig, Ji.hlava IDFF, and Visions du Réel Nyon – were later joined in 2011 by the French festival FIDMarseille and two years later by the Portuguese festival Doclisboa. Doc Alliance jointly operates the Doc Alliance Films VOD portal (DAFilms.com), which currently offers more than 2,000 films online. Since 2008, the Doc Alliance platform has been awarding its documentary award called the Doc Alliance Selection Award, which recognizes the best first and second European documentary feature film, as well as the best short film since 2021, independently selected by each of the member festivals in the Alliance. Individual festivals are also nominated by representatives of an expert jury comprised of film critics and professionals who hail from the country in which each festival takes place. As part of the Doc Alliance Selection, each festival that falls under the Doc Alliance umbrella screens at least three films recently nominated for this award as part of their film program. The award is handed out annually during the Marché du Film Docu Day event in Cannes. Our main goals for 2022-2024 are: 1/ DOC ALLIANCE AWARD - To continue to program the Doc Alliance Selection and Award for short and feature documentaries, to increase its visibility, and widen its distribution channels. 2/ DOC ALLIANCE NETWORK – to develop the online and offline network knowledge-sharing meetings, by focussing on specific areas of expertise and producing publicly available materials on these areas of festival work, as well as by inviting guest festivals to participate in the meetings either on a one-off basis or as a yearlong member of the Alliance via a new open call.
