DOE Small Modular Reactor Pilot Program

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is starting a new pilot program to expedite testing of advanced reactor designs, including small modular reactors (SMRs), under its direct supervision. The program oversees pilot projects conducted outside of national laboratories and aims to fast-track innovation in nuclear energy by allowing companies to build and operate test reactors outside the traditional national laboratory process. The program is aligned with President Trump's executive order on nuclear testing reforms and targets operational reactors by July 4, 2026.
