In order to take actual steps towards a low-carbon economy, the necessary elements must be present to make a circular economy possible. That is why a clear overview of the supply and demand of energy such as biomass, gas, electricity and heat is necessary, as is the structural linking of interested parties. If there is already a corresponding demand or supply, there are currently few or no players in the border region that combine both knowledge and expertise with effective support. In addition, private companies do not fully see the economic feasibility in the exchange of energy flows. ‘DOEN’ wants to develop and test a methodology that takes into account both economic criteria and social and spatial preconditions. This will be used as a public service to help accelerate, increase and improve the number of sustainable exchange projects. ‘DOEN’ develops a plan and toolbox on the one hand so that energy brokers can get started in a concrete and structured way. On the other hand, through information sessions the project will appeal to companies that are not involved in the cases, but want to be informed about the opportunity for exchange. The targeted support includes raising awareness, clarifying uncertainties, providing technical, organizational and legal support in the preparation of energy exchange projects and promoting consultation between different stakeholders for anchoring in (local) policy. ‘DOEN’ is exploring completely new avenues such as an exchange between Arcelor Mittal and the centers of the municipalities of Zelzate and Terneuzen. Despite the proximity of the port industry, residual heat is not linked to nearby village centers. DOEN wants to map the demand side and investigates what impact an expansion of the heating network would have on Terneuzen. DOEN is also committed to continuing trajectories, for example De Wildert in Dongen (NL). Glass factory Ardagh Glas and Coca-Cola, one of the largest bottling plants in Europe, is located on de Wildert. For example, a fermentation plant could make some of Ardagh's gas consumption greener, while the residual heat from the glass factory could be used to supply Coca-Cola and the fermenter with heat and process the digestive into a bio-based product.
