THE DAUGHTER OF GENGHIS (DoG) is a creative documentary for TV and online distribution produced by Danish Elk Film together with Swedish Mantaray Film, with Pumpernickel as co-producers and financially supported by The Danish Film Institute, FilmFyn, Creative Europe MEDIA, DANIDA (The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and Nordisk Film & TV Fund, among others. The Film is directed by the photo journalistic duo of Kristoffer Juel Poulsen and Christian Als. Inspired by the great Genghis Khan, the 36-year-old woman and mother, Gerel dreams of bringing back the glory of the proud nomadic culture to now globalised, polluted and impoverished Mongolia. She throws herself into action, founding Gerel Khas, a nationalist feminist NGO. The women of the group are angry and driven by grand nationalist ideals but their methods – including violent raids on prostitution saunas and a program of cleaning the Mongolian Swastika of Nazi appropriation by touring the world on horses - are highly questionable. At the same time Gerel, an Ulaanbaatar city girl who can’t even ride a horse, is struggling with her own orphaned past, hustling for survival and mothering her young son Temuulen. When she is forced to leave Temuulen with distant relatives to take up a job 500km away and work for the Chinese she blames for exploiting her country, Gerel’s world starts falling apart. Will she save herself, and her son? Does she even know how? THE DAUGHTER OF GENGHIS is an epic story of a female anti-hero; her own contradictions mirror that of Mongolia, her shocking violence reveals a justifiable anger and her struggle to be a mother exposes a painful childhood trauma. From unbridled violence of Ulaanbaatar’s underbelly to wide open deserts, the film’s cinematic eye follows fiercely feminist Gerel as she discovers that her dreams of greatness for herself and Mongolia may be found elsewhere than first expected.
