Description

Description

Klondike Development Organization is undertaking a 309 kW DC/199kW AC solar power project generating 280MWh of energy each year in Dawson City, Yukon. The project aims to offset our community’s carbon footprint through production of renewable energy. While Dawson like much of the Yukon benefits from hydro electricity, we also rely on a diesel generation plant to provide power in times of high demand or in times of power outage. Moving towards solar power produced in our local area would mean less need for Yukon Energy’s diesel generator sets to turn on, and would increase our self-sufficiency here at the end of the power grid. This project can be seen as a stand-alone project of small size, but it has excellent potential for scaling up and/or expansion as capacity increases either within KDO or as new partnerships or other opportunities allow. The site identified for the installation is a former garbage dump and Land Treatment Facility. Soils testing this past summer indicate and satisfy the Yukon Department of Environment that the site is remediated to allow an installation such as ours, however it could not be used for housing or recreation activities. Using this municipal brownfield for solar power generation offers an opportunity to put land which is otherwise unusable to positive community benefit. Based on the Helioscope model, 152.7 MWh of energy is expected to be generated from this project during the shoulder season/winter months of September through May. If we calculate 0.8 Tonnes per MWh burning diesel, this translates into 122 Tonnes of CO2 emissions offsets annually. If we wanted to be conservative and assume a mix of LNG and Diesel offsets, we may calculate 0.6 Tonnes per MWh which would translate into 91.6 Tonnes of annual GHG offsets once our project is operational.
