Description

Description

Donghae Port has served as a hub for northern trade and logistics in Northeast Asia since its opening in 1979. As the volume of goods to be handled increased, the three-phase development project of Donghae Port was carried out to smoothly manage congested ships and commodities and strengthen the port’s competitiveness as an international trade port. Among the Phase 3 of construction consisting of the northern breakwater and the breakwater revetment, Hyundai E&C was in charge of constructing a breakwater revetment(zone 1) and constructed 150m Eastern breakwater, 539m breakwater revetment, 759m waterfront revetment, and 1 auxiliary construction. The most important thing in the breakwater and breakwater revetment construction is to secure the “harbor tranquility,” which refers to the stable state of the sea level in the port and to prevent wave overtopping where the seawater flows over the floor of the breakwater. Based on the analysis results and experiments such as the flow of waves in nearby waters and the direction of waves due to surrounding facilities, the site applied a 100-year frequency design wave and a design of floor height significantly raised to a maximum of DL (+) of 14.5m. In addition, the site overcame risks with a three-phase customized reinforcement plan in a limestone cavity irregularly distributed in the original ground and secured safety and durability through detailed analysis and further review. An optimal design was also applied to maximize the functionality of the facility. In front of the breakwater caisson, the form of rubble mound with the best hydraulic characteristics was adopted, and a 70-ton cover of sofa block and an open slit caisson to all sections of the breakwater and breakwater revetment were applied. Moreover, a three-sided open slit caisson was used for the breakwater head. In particular, inside the breakwater revetment, a five-stage breakwater floor-mounted design was introduced, completely blocking the waves and strengthening the core function of the breakwater revetment while adding to its aesthetic appearance.[ Port tranquility was secured by applying a three-sided open slit caisson at the head of the breakwater. ][ A five-stage half-wave upper design was adopted to completely block the wave overtopping in the breakwater revetment. ]As it was a large-scale port construction project across the east coast, high waves and climate change were the biggest issues. There was a time when a typhoon, which hit two or three times a year, swept away all the ripraps and armor stones worked on for three to four months, which left the site devastated. However, the site workers quickly completed the rubble mound breakwater by deploying marine equipment early, and the caisson was also worked on several months earlier while damage recovery work was strategically performed to minimize delay in the process.
