Description
Description | TANESCO, a state-owned enterprise that supplies electricity to Tanzania, contracted Ltd. Dowans Holdings to install a rental (leased) plant at Ubungo where at site B (near the SONGAS plant) units of 22 MW are installed and at site A (behind TANESCO Head Office Ubungo building) units of 80 MW are to be installed in 2006. The project was estimated to cost around T.Shs. 172.5 billion. Intially, TANESCO chose Richmond Development Corporation (RDC) of United States of America as the contractor. The contract was signed on 23rd June 2006 and the works were supposed to have been completed in 150 days, and the rental contract is for two years. However, RDC on 23rd December 2006 assigned their rights and obligations acceptable within the contract to Dowans Holdings Ltd. of United Arab Emirates. Delivery of the first 20MWplant was done and by the end of the year the plant was still undergoing test runs. The contractor managed to connect to the grid on several occasions but the plant has not stabilized due to technical problems. The balance of the plant i.e. 80 MW was sea frighted and equipment was received in Dar es Salaam on 27th December, 2006. Installation was expected to start when site leveling and compaction works were completed. The rental project concluded in August 2008. It was reported that Tanesco was considering buying the generators. In 2011, Symbion Power bought up the 120MW power plant (lying idle) for an estimated $120 million.
