Downtown AEP Building Repurposing Project

The city of Canton, Ohio acquired the downtown American Electric Power (AEP) building for $1 to transform it into a new public safety hub and office space. The project involves creating a first-floor safety center housing police administrative offices, employee training, investigative division, and the county crime lab. The building will also accommodate various city departments that have outgrown their current offices. AEP will lease back one floor and pay for renovations on that floor. A study to determine operating costs and next steps is expected to be completed in 6-9 months, with renovations to begin thereafter. The full project is estimated to take 7-8 years to complete.
