Description

Description

Work on the water supply includes renovations and extensions to the main pipe transporting water to the Brașov distribution network. The infrastructure, which is 15.57 km long, will include two reservoirs to be built in Moieciu, while parts of the Brașov and Moieciu distribution networks, which extend over 32.35 km, will be upgraded. For waste-water collection and treatment, sewerage systems in Brașov-Stupini-Săcele, Prejmer-Lunca Câlnicului and Bran-Moieciu will be extended by 42.75 km. Further improvements are planned for waste-water collectors 24.96 km in length in Brașov-Stupini-Săcele.Benefits for health and the environmentThe project also includes the construction of five waste-water pumping stations, one in Brașov-Stupini-Săcele and two each in Prejmer-Lunca Câlnicului and Bran-Moieciu, and two waste-water treatment plants, one in Feldioara and the other in Bran-Moieciu.The work will take place in the agglomerations of Brașov-Stupini-Săcele, Codlea, Feldioara, Rupea Gara, Homorod, Hoghiz, Prejmer-Lunca Câlnicului and Bran-Moieciu, covering a total population of around 379 000.In its second phase, the project has a global budget of approximately EUR 27.4 million, of which nearly EUR 17.5 million comes from the EU’s Cohesion Fund. The project’s first phase was much larger in scope and received EU funding totalling over EUR 127 million. The main objectives are to ensure provision of good-quality drinking water for the local population, with positive knock-on effects of reducing risks to human health. Thanks to improvements to the drinking-water supply system, 99 % of residents in the area will be connected to the network and will thus have continuous access to safe water. As far as connections to the sewerage system are concerned, the entire local population will be served by the network when the project has been completed. In addition, thanks to the work done during both phases, the risk of uncontrolled discharge of untreated waste-water will be minimised, thereby reducing the risk of environmental pollution.Located within the historic region of Transylvania, Brașov County as a whole has a population of around 550 000. This culturally diverse area is home to Hungarian, Roma and German minorities. The county is highly industrialised, being an important centre for the mechanical, automotive, chemical and construction sectors. It is also a popular tourist destination, featuring a number of mountain resorts.Total investment and EU fundingTotal investment for the project “Extension and modernisation of water supply and waste water treatment systems in Brașov County - Phase II” is EUR 27 400 051, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 17 465 155 through the “Large Infrastructure” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period.
