Description

Description

The ongoing civil war in Syria has led to an increasing influx of refugees to Jordan, around 80 percent of whom live in towns and villages outside of the official refugee camps. This has further exacerbated the already critical situation of water supply and sanitation in the region. The aim of the project is to improve the drinking water supply and sanitation for the local population and refugees in northern Jordan through broad-based expansion and to prevent conflicts over the scarce resource of water. The current Phase VII is being implemented together with the follow-up phase Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation for Syrian Refugees and Host Communities VIII (BMZ No. 2018 67 951). The basic package of measures includes the expansion and rehabilitation of drinking water and sanitation networks as well as the rehabilitation of water transport lines and pumping stations. The rehabilitation or replacement of wells is also planned in some cases. The specific selection of measures is to be based on a defined catalogue of criteria. We estimate the total costs at approximately EUR 66.0 million, which will be provided as a grant from Phase VII and Phase VIII. No contribution from the Jordanian side is planned.
