Difficult climatic and geological conditions in Tunisia are leading to an absolute water shortage and severe salinization of the limited groundwater resources. To counteract this, the project aims to build six central plants for the demineralization of saline groundwater and the associated infrastructure in disadvantaged areas of central and southern Tunisia to enable the population living in the program region to be supplied with hygienically safe drinking water that complies with Tunisian standards all year round (module objective). In order to integrate renewable energies to generate electricity for brackish water desalination, SONEDE is currently examining an investment in photovoltaics after the generation of wind energy at the Ben Guerdane site proved to be uneconomical.
