The E&D Agro Project, Energy transition and Drying in the Agro Sector, focuses on the development of innovations for drying and processing agricultural products. This applies in particular to the drying of herbs and plants after harvesting. The market for dry products is growing steadily, mainly due to the growing market for ready meals and for health reasons. Drying is currently carried out by two partners using large amounts of natural gas. The project consortium, which is largely the same as in the E&P Agro project, is arranged thematically along the value chain of the crops that are cultivated, harvested and processed. The aim of the project is to significantly reduce the energy input and CO2 emissions for the drying process by replacing the energy source natural gas with a combination of geothermal heat (heat pumps), PV solar cells and solar heat. In addition, innovative mobile drying containers are being developed for decentralised use in agricultural operations in the Netherlands and Germany and, in a second step, also as a solution for conditioned and controlled drying in the tropics. The solutions are implemented in the form of pilot plants.
