Description

Description

The East Africa Trade and Transport Facilitation Project is consistent with the objectives of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and part of its short-term action plan for infrastructure. The project is a good example of coordinated donor effort to provide assistance to several regional member countries and regional organizations to tackle trade and transport facilitation challenges on a regional scale. It is designed to address the development constraints caused by poor transportation and logistics systems in East Africa. The project includes country specific components in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, and regional components targeted to the East African Community Secretariat the Northern Corridor Transit Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA), and the Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency. As indicated earlier, under the partnership arrangement with the World Bank, the country specific components will be financed by IDA loans and grants while the regional components would be financed by an ADF grant. Its Implementation is expected to contribute to enhance trade and regional integration, by reducing general transport costs, increasing market sizes beyond national boundaries, increasing economic output, and giving rise to other socio-economic benefits. The estimated total cost of the project irrespective of the financing source is UA 195.50 million (USD 280.06 million) not including the Partial Risk Guarantee. The components funded by the ADF will be implemented over a period of 48 months, starting from January 2007.
