Description

Description

The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) is a $5 billion oil pipeline project designed to transport crude oil from Uganda's Albertine Graben to Tanzania's Tanga port. The 1,443-kilometer pipeline will enable Uganda to export its oil for the first time, with a designed capacity to transport 216,000 barrels of crude oil per day, ramping up to 246,000 barrels per day. The project is led by French supermajor TotalEnergies and involves oil production from the Albertine Rift Basin, including the Tilenga and Kingfisher oilfields developed by TotalEnergies and China's CNOOC. The pipeline construction is nearly completed, with expected completion as soon as July 2026 and first shipments planned for late 2026 or early 2027. However, the project faces legal challenges from Ugandan farmers suing in the UK High Court to block the pipeline on environmental grounds, citing potential harm to water resources, wildlife, and biodiversity along the route.
