Description | Okaloosa County received a $320,000 grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to advance the design and permitting phase of an expanded dredging operation at East Pass. The project aims to increase the volume of sand dredged from the federal channel to between 600,000 and over one million cubic yards, up from the current 200,000 cubic yards every five years. The dredged sand will be placed on adjacent beaches to combat erosion, with potential placement to the east or west of Destin's East Pass. The project also aims to reduce shoaling in the navigation channel, benefiting local economy and missions by Eglin Air Force Base and the U.S. Coast Guard. |
