Description

Description

The East River Tunnel, a critical rail link between Queens and Manhattan used by LIRR, Amtrak, and NJ TRANSIT, underwent a rehabilitation project to modernize and restore two of its four tubes damaged by Superstorm Sandy. On December 16, 2025, a broken rail in one of the East River tunnels caused a major service disruption, leading to diversions of LIRR trains to alternate terminals and widespread delays. Amtrak repaired the broken rail, but delays lingered due to constrained track capacity caused by ongoing tunnel work.
