This project involves the modernization of the Eastern Railway Line, which stretches for about 340 km from Accra to Kumasi with a branch rail line from Achimota to Tema Port. It was built in 1923. Currently, it is virtually non-operational, due to severe dilapidation.The project will include the financing, development, construction, operation, and maintenance of the 340km line as well as the provision of rolling stock, station upgrades, signaling, and communication equipment with the Government of Ghana having a 30 percent share.The project is also planned to have a branch line at Bososo to Kyebi to the proposed bauxite mines, and to be linked to the inland port at Boankra in the Ashanti Region.The upgraded rail system will consist of three major stations in Accra, Koforidua and Kumasi and 30 small stations along the line.
