Eastman Chemical Co. is reconsidering its strategy for building a second U.S. chemical recycling plant after the cancellation of a $375 million federal grant in 2025. The original plan was to build a methanolysis-based plastics recycling plant in Longview, Texas, to complement an existing facility in Kingsport, Tennessee. The company is now exploring an asset-light model focusing on mixed plastic processing plants in the mechanical recycling space and leveraging existing polymer capacity. They are also considering increasing the annual processing capacity of the second location to up to 150 kilotons.
