EAVI has a dream that technologies can unite us, not divide us. That social media will be better designed in the future to bring benefits to the users, not that algorithms amplify divisions, but to connect, to educate, to empower people. By equipping citizens with the tools and skills to navigate this digital environment where instead unfortunately perceptions are now shaped easily, and narratives create new realities and serve as breeding grounds for disinformation misusing the pretext of free speech, EAVI wishes to bring its experience, to foster hope for the future. We will serve in the larger mechanisms by playing our part and contribute to advancing democratic standards. Through a wide range of activities across Europe and structured in its four Programmes, EAVI will be contributing to empower citizens in defending democracy (festival, awareness raising, engagement, content production and distribution, interactive events and information activities) and also contributing to implement and advance relevant policies objectives (with research, publications, workshops, meetings, recommendations). As a result, beneficiaries will gain a greater understanding of the role that the media plays in our societies, and what the EU is doing to protect citizens rights. Citizens, CSO and policy makers will also acquire access to information, essential knowledge, and new media literacy skills to reflect on their own media consumption, to tackle disinformation, and some inspiration for a long-term change in their attitudes when confronted with media content on their screens. To be even more effective EAVI and building on our foundations, we will run some initiatives - including a full festival event that we call Democracy & Information Festival - in the European countries where elections’ integrity is more at risk and the support for a direct participation of citizens is more needed.
