The project is part of the first phase of an investment program of the municipal water supplier Lusaka Water and Sanitation Company (LWSC). The investment program consists of the following components (A) construction of two new sewage treatment plants, rehabilitation and expansion of the primary sewage canals and the associated pumping stations and (B) rehabilitation and expansion of the sewer system and construction of decentralized sanitation facilities. Component B is financed by the World Bank (WB), African Development Bank (AfDB), European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Zambian government (GRZ). Component A is financed jointly by the EIB and KfW. The investment is accompanied by technical support for the project sponsor and other stakeholders from the respective financiers. The aim of the FC measure is to improve basic sanitation for the urban population of Lusaka and thus to ensure environmentally friendly and hygienically safe wastewater management in the project area. A secondary objective of the project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (use of methane gas to generate process heat) and to increase adaptation capacities and resilience to the consequences of climate change (increasing heavy rainfall events) in the form of flood-proof wastewater infrastructure. Furthermore, the FC measure makes a substantial contribution to protecting surface and groundwater resources from contamination through proper wastewater disposal. The target group of the project is the residents of Lusaka (directly) and the population beyond the project region who benefit from the protection of water resources (indirectly).
