Description

Description

ECOGYP contributes to the conservation of biodiversity in the Pyrenees by developing a joint framework for the sustainable management of necrophagous birds of prey, and strengthening links between key Pyrenean players. Necrophagous birds and their habitats, both under threat, provide society with a host of ecosystem services that are little known and undervalued, which is why ECOGYP proposes environmental and social measures to recover the presence of these birds and to revalue the ecosystem services that they provide. The outcome shall be: a) greater value placed on the ecosystem services provided by the necrophagous birds and their habitats; b) improved habitat management though the ‘necrophagous birds of prey’ service provider; c) coordinated and harmonised protocols for follow-up and ecosystem management services. The main benefactors will be: a) public administrations; b) tourist operators; c) universities and research centres; d) local players: livestock farmers, agricultural farmers, hunters, etc.; e) local inhabitants, tourists, students. In the ECOGYP project, for the first time all the regions in the land, from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, are to work together to confront the issues faced by the necrophagous birds and their habitats, because managing, raising awareness, and valuing the ecosystem services they provide, and fostering the relationship between mankind and necrophagous birds calls for a unanimous effort.
