The Education Project for Tunisia development objective is to provide assistance for the most urgent requirements of the Tunisian school system by firstly, provide financing for the construction of six middle and secondary schools. These schools are urgently needed to reduce overcrowding and to enable teachers who are already on the job to be used more effectively. Secondly, while the schools are being constructed, a second phase of the program will be carried out simultaneously to determine how construction costs can be held down or reduced for the remainder of the school construction program. It is believed that important savings may be possible by the standardization of the basic units common to various types of schools or by the more effective use of space. A team of experts will prepare the specific design for model secondary schools of various types and at the and at same time a basic manual will be prepared. By the time the architectural and construction team has produce the basic manual it will be possible, on a more certain basis than now, for the Tunisian Government to formulate its expansion plans, taking into account the results of these two activities.
