Gases de Risaralda was awarded the contract to build, own, and operate the gas distribution system of Risaralda (Eje Cafetero) in mid-1997. Construction works began immediately and commercial operation started in mid-1998. Gases de Risaralda is a joint-venture of Emp. Publicas de Pereira (33.45%), Gas Natural (19.03%), Andean Gas (19.03%), Gases del Caribe (19.03%), Corfioccidente (2.77%) and others (6.69%). The company has a 17-year exclusivity contract, after which time the market will be openned for competition. In September 2009 Efigas was creasted by a merger of Gas Natural del Centro (project 2694), Gases de Risaralda (project 2693) and Gases del Quindío (project 2692), which became the sixth largest distributor of gas in Colombia with over 290,000 clients. Shareholding was not known, except that Gases del Caribe held a majority of the shares and that Efigas had approximately 20 shareholders. En cuanto a Gases del Caribe esta participa con un 86,9% en Gases de La Guajira y directa e indirectamente con el 80,6% de las acciones de Efigas, empresa creada en septiembre de 2009 como resultado del proceso de fusión de Gas Natural del Centro, Gases de Risaralda y Gases del Quindío, que se convierte en la sexta distribuidora de gas natural del país al atender más de 290.000 usuarios
