Description

A consortium led by the US based - Cinergy and the black empowerment group, Egoli Empowerment Holdings, was chosen to purchase Johannesburg's Metro Gas Company for R 110 million ($15.9 million). Renamed Egoli Gas, the consortium announced in September 2000 the signing of a 20-year contract with Sasol Gas. In the terms of the supply agreement, Sasol Gas will provide the Johannesburg area with 2.5 million cubic feet per year, with an option to increase the supply up to 7 million cubic feet per year. Metro Gas serves 14,000 customers in the country's business capital, 70% of which are domestic consumers. Egoli Gas planned to invest a further R276m ($40m) in the privatized firm and expand its distribution network. The other members of the consortium include: Pulamadiboho Investments, Merafe Investments, Chemsol Management Services and Palesa Property Investments. The local groups hold an initial 5% equity stake and gain an option to acquire a 20% interest in the future. None None
