Egypt - Fifth Drainage Project

The present project relates to the Drainage V Project. It's designed to address the growing gap between agricultural production and consumption by reducing the key constraints which were identified, namely: (i) very limited availability of agricultural land; (ii) the difficult situation resulting from high water tables and salinity; and (iii) weaknesses in the institutions responsible for providing agricultural support services. The project comprises the following components: (i) remodeling of about 667 km of existing surface, open channel, drains; (ii) installation of subsurface drainage systems for about 465,000 gross or 416,000 net feddan; (iii) assistance with maintenance through the construction of nine maintenance centers and ninety sub-centers; (iv) training and technical assistance; strengthening of the Drainage Research Institute.
