Egypt: Sustainable POPs Management Project

The Sustainable Persistent Organic Pollutants Management Project objective is to improve the management and disposal of targeted stockpiles of obsolete pesticides, including Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCBs), in an environmentally sound manner. The project consists of two components. The first component concerns the destruction of high risk stocks of obsolete pesticide where activities under this component are focused on the environmentally sound disposal of high risk stocks known and inventoried at time of project appraisal, and those that can be identified as high risk stocks through a first level risk assessment. The second component concerns the decontamination of PCB-containing transformer oils where activities under this Component will focus on the procurement of equipment for dechlorination and purification of PCB contaminated oils, which will produce oil suitable for reuse in equipment.
