Description | Pennsylvania American Water is completing more than $11 million in upgrades at its E.H. Aldrich Water Treatment Plant in Elrama. The upgrades improve drinking water reliability, efficiency, and safety for approximately 527,000 customers in Allegheny and Washington counties. The majority of the investment, about $8 million, is allocated to essential upgrades for the facility’s raw water intake and pump station, necessitated by a drop in Monongahela River water levels after the removal of Locks and Dam 3 in 2024. Construction started in September 2025, involving replacement of intake bar screens and traveling screens, installation of temporary pumps, and reconstruction of raw-water pumps to prevent service disruptions. Additionally, a $3 million safety improvement project was recently completed, including a new chemical unloading and containment area and upgraded pumps, piping, and treatment equipment. |
