El Salitral Desalination Plant

In September 2011, GS Inima Environment S.A., a subsidiary of the Spanish company OHL, was awarded the contract to build and operate a desalination plant located at Ensenada, Baja California. The El Salitral Plant was established to produce 7.88 million m³/year and benefit 96,000 people. The bidding criteria was the best technical and economic offer, and seven bidders took part in the process. The names of the other participants were not available. The 20-year contract was signed in December 2011. Inima created the special purpose company Aguas de Ensenada S.A. de C.V. to manage the project. The investment was estimated at US$ 48.3 million. In December 2014, the Nadbank approved a US$ 22 million loan to the project.
