Electra Battery Cobalt Sulfate Refinery

Electra Battery Materials is constructing North America's first commercial-scale battery-grade cobalt sulfate refinery in Ontario, Canada. The facility aims to produce 5,120 tonnes of contained cobalt annually initially, with potential expansion to 6,500 tonnes. It uses solvent extraction technology and includes environmental management systems. The project has secured 60% of its production through 2029 via an offtake agreement with LG Energy Solution. Construction progress includes completion of fire suppression system design, piping and instrumentation integrated into 3D modeling, tailings facility testwork, and installation of key process equipment. The project has a $73 million approved budget and targets production startup in 2027.
