Description | Infrastructure Ontario (IO) is working with the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade (MEDJCT) to support the development of the site for a new electric vehicle battery cell plant on an approximately 140-hectare site within the City of St. Thomas, Ontario. The province announced a historic investment from Volkswagen Group, Europe’s largest automaker, in April 2023. The plant, Volkswagen’s largest battery gigafactory to-date, will create up to 3,000 direct jobs and thousands more indirect jobs. Once complete in 2027, the plant will produce batteries for up to one million electric vehicles per year, bolstering Canada’s domestic battery manufacturing capacity to meet the demand for electric vehicles now and into the future. IO is working together with MEDJCT to deliver various works to prepare the site for the plant. The electric vehicle battery cell plant will be designed and built exclusively by Volkswagen Group/PowerCo SE. |
