Electric rickshaws [also called totos] are gaining traction across India. Currently, these are being made by local entrepreneurs or companies, who put together parts mostly imported from China. Due to their lower initial and lower running costs, they have found wide acceptance. However, due to lack of systematic design, totos have issues with handling, safety, reliability, performance, and comfort. Also, due to low life of lead acid batteries used in totos, the toto owners have to bear periodic maintenance costs. IIT Kharagpurs Electric Vehicle Group has indigenously built ‘Deshla - prototype of a fully indigenous next-gen electric auto. With its powerful motor, lithium ion battery that can last up to 6-7 years, high load carrying capacity, sturdy frame and yet easy manoeuvrability it is not only clean and green, but it also steals a march on totos and conventional autos when it comes to the issues of safety, reliability, performance, comfort, and low running costs.
