Elk Hills Carbon Capture and Sequestration Project

California Resources is developing the Elk Hills project, which is set to become California's first commercial-scale carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) operation. The project involves initial CO2 injection expected in spring 2026, pending EPA approval, and aims to store CO2 underground via EPA Class VI geologic sequestration wells. The project has potential to serve approximately 2.4 gigawatts of baseload power generation within 100 miles, representing up to 6.1 million metric tons per year of CO2 emissions, with annual injection rates contemplated up to 7.0 million metric tons across Central Valley reservoirs.
