Description

Description

The abandoned Ellinikon Airport near Athens, Greece, which was closed in 2001, is being redeveloped into a large new seaside city. The £7.3 billion project includes the construction of a 200 metre Riviera Tower, Greece's tallest building, with 169 residences across 50 floors. The development aims to be Europe's largest smart city, featuring residential areas, commercial spaces, cultural venues, green areas, a massive park, thousands of new homes, offices, shopping centres, sports facilities, hotels, entertainment venues, and a new marina for luxury yachts. The project covers approximately 6,200 acres of urban living and 600 acres of parks and open green spaces, with over one kilometer of new public beachfront. It is expected to attract around one million visitors annually and generate about 85,000 new jobs. The concept of a '15-minute city' is central to the design, promoting accessibility to essential services within a short walk or bike ride, fostering sustainability and climate resilience.
